Among the many examples of these atrocities, there's the 1973 Military Coup that installed General Augusto Pinochet over Chilean President Salvador Allende. Upon being elected into office, President Allende had announced plans to Nationalize a number of business Industries & this would have left several American Firms (Exploiters) out in the cold. When President Richard Nixon's efforts to turn the People of Chile against their President, by doing all that could be done to wreck their economy, American then began backing three separate groups intended to stage a coup. Weapons & Intel were provided to the groups, and on September 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet assumed power. Allende & many of his supporters were executed. Over the next 17 years, more than 3,100 people were murdered & another 29,000 were said to have been tortured. Only Old age & Dementia could stop Pinochet's rule.
Another gross example of America's bloody hand deals with the 1961 assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the recently liberated Democratic Republic of the Congo. Though The Congolese Citizens had successfully staged a revolution against its Belgian Colonial Oppressors, American supported Belgium's efforts to keep control of many of the new nation's resources. The conflict had escalated to violence, which prompted Lumumba to reach to The Soviet Union for supplies. Lumumba would then marked for death, by The CIA, but the first attempt failed. in late 1960 he was captured and tortured. On January 17th 1961, Patrice Lumumba was executed. Joseph Mobutu would be installed as the new leader of The Congo, and would run the country into the group-while meddling in the affairs of neighboring African Nations.
Other notable interventions include Indonesia in 1965, in which CIA-backed General Suharto was placed in power over President Sukarno. Sukarno's crime against humanity was that he refused to choose sides in The Cold War; so from 1957 until 1965, the U.S. tried assassinating Sukarno both literally & via propaganda. As for General Suharto, he is credited with executed somewhere between 500,000 & 1 Million Indonesian citizens identified by The CIA as "Suspected Communists." Let's not forget Haiti's "Papa Doc" Duvalier, who is allegedly responsible for more than 100,000 deaths during his American-Approved reign. His son would later take power, and continue the Family Business. There's also the U.S. Navy supported deposing of Guatemalan President Jacobo Árbenz in 1954, and others like it in The Dominican Republic in 1961, South Vietnam in 1963, Brazil in 1964, and Angola in 1975. Not as efficient as they once were, recent activities to overthrow the leaders of Egypt, Libya & Syria have all led to serious blow-back. It will be interesting to see what strategy changes may come under the now Republican-Controlled Congress & the next President.
